Procedure: Facelifts

As we age, our face changes. The fat which once sat high on our cheekbones descends downward and our skin develops wrinkles and loses its smooth appearance. Sometimes nonsurgical treatments including Botox, fillers, skin care and lasers can help address these problems, but at times a facelift is the best solution. A facelift is truly a face and neck lift. It brings the fat and underlying tissues (SMAS) to a higher position on the face and it also smooths and tightens the skin. The most common areas of the face which are addressed include the cheeks, deep folds between the nose and corners of the mouth (nasolabial folds), the jawline and the neck. Sometimes we will add other procedures to the facelift including fat injections, peels and eyelid or brow procedures to address other concerns. Each individual is different. Facelifts have changed a lot over the years. Today’s innovations have allowed plastic surgeons to perform facelifts with shorter scars, lesser downtime and a quicker recovery. Yet, the overall result is as good or better than the more invasive facelifts of previous years. Although new techniques continue to evolve, “minifacelifts” are here to stay.

Facelifts are done as an outpatient procedure. You will have a nurse stay with you that night and change your dressing in the morning. You can expect to have bruising and swelling for the first two weeks. Surprisingly, most patients say this is not a very painful procedure and therefore, we must remind patients to take it easy and not do too much in the post-operative period.
